Helping SA would like to concentrate a bit more on the elderly, as we =
believe that not only are they currently the most vulnerable but also =
the most discarded and forgotten, thus our special drive is our .=20
As many do not receive any assistance from the government as the state=
feel that for one or other reason, they do not qualify for the elderl=
y grant, and the ones that does qualify finally did received a little =
raise of R10 per month since October 2023 now enabling only about 20% =
of the elderly population in South Africa to receive a grant of R 2090=
and if they are over the age of 75 they will receive an additional R2=
0. Does this really seem viable in today=E2=80=99s prices?
It=E2=80=99s a daily fight for these elderly to stay alive, the countr=
ies job loss is so enormous already so to expect these elderly to be e=
mployed by any company or even private person is completely off the ta=
ble as they are now only seen as a liability and problematic as so man=
y suffer with great illnesses which will make it impossible to have a =
8 hour job or get anyone willing enough to be accommodating to their i=
ssues as they themselves need to do the best for their companies as th=
ey also have families to look after.
The elderly that does receive a grant can barely pay rent for a back r=
oom or garage as this is already as high as R800-R1200 per month and i=
t=E2=80=99s for the greater part for broken down places with cement fl=
oors and sometimes no windows and just horrific conditions then also g=
et done in by the so called landlord, then if they are lucky they are =
able to buy some food if they have electricity available to even prepa=
re this food and then the electricity bill also needs to be paid, if t=
here is no electricity or running water they still need to buy gas / p=
araffin and water,=20
our elderly gets taken advantage of on a daily basis by individuals pr=
etending to offer a roof over their heads and then those individuals c=
laim their full grant at the end of the month, while mistreating and u=
nder feeding them.=20
The hygiene of these elderly is a very difficult situation as they eit=
her do not have proper facilities or a simple thing as a bar of soap a=
nd some are only allowed to bath once a week depending on where they s=
tay (who took control over them).
We have found elderly relying on eating dog food as its much cheaper =
than cat food or actual human food, its heartbreaking to imagine these=
ones full of life individuals become so vulnerable and ended up in su=
ch horrifying situations and having to repeat the same vicious circle =
of despair day in day out, spending most of their day wishing and pray=
ing for their life=E2=80=99s to end as they feel that death will be be=
tter than continuing on this never ending war called surviving.
Then there is the massive impact of the elderly who does not receive a=
ny grant at all, they fall completely through the cracks.=20
When winter time comes these elderly, receiving a grant or not, can=E2=
=80=99t even afford a blanket or a pair of warm socks, ending up givin=
g up, rolling into a ball hungry and cold, something we seldomly hear =
about is the death toll of the elderly through winter months, this is =
never properly brought to light as it would be evident on how South Af=
rica is failing their elderly the same people whose backs this country=
and current and future generations are build on is now just discarded=
as waist.=20
Yes, it=E2=80=99s true, where is these elderlie's families? This is al=
ways the question on everyone=E2=80=99s lips, some families struggle s=
o much they are unable to assist, yes they might share a bread or a ti=
n of jam with them but to hundreds of families its just not possible a=
s they themselves are in the same kind of situation, then we have many=
more who has no family and yes of course we still do have families an=
d children able to help their parents, to those elderly we pray it nev=
er change and we are grateful there is still cases like that, but WE n=
eed to be there for the ones who is desperate and forgotten, we need t=
o be the change, show that their life has not been for nothing.
Most of the elderly that we assist have illnesses or problems like, ar=
thritis, diabetes, COPD, heart problems, cancer, hip replacements, bac=
k and neck problems.=20
Which creates a completely new and different struggle for our elderly =
and that is to get to the hospitals and clinics for proper medical ass=
istance they can=E2=80=99t get to the clinics to collect their chronic=
medicine, in some areas if you pay a fee to the clinic they will have=
it deliver, we pay that fee for them where this is an option, if not =
we have volunteers assisting to take off a day from their jobs to pick=
up a few elderly and take them to the clinics but even with this we s=
till are not able to do this for everyone on our list we assist, areas=
and volunteers differs, we then try with transport cost with taxis, t=
his alone is such a safety risk for these elderly but there is just no=
other options, staying without their needed medication is not an opti=
on.
We also have some cases where there is special medications needed wher=
e they have a script but the clinics do not provide it, we have to jum=
p in and get that covered as well, one should think that the destitute=
elderly who does not have medical aid would be able to rely fully on =
our government medical system but the sad reality is that it=E2=80=99s=
not the case, if they need to go to the hospital to see a doctor they=
can=E2=80=99t if they do not have the R45 to open a file never mind t=
he transport and if they get admitted they are forgotten, no one to fo=
llow up on them they get mistreated and not properly cared for.
We keep in contact and do general wellness checks on the elderly that =
we assist, we do not just give food and turn our backs, we focus a lot=
of our time, love and care on their emotional support and safety as t=
his is a very important part of our work and something we strive on is=
to be human and kind that is why we are doing this very important que=
st in the first place is because all our board members and volunteers =
are involved for the love of it and to work to make an impact that cou=
nts!
Our goal is to provide the elderly with proper food parcels, gas, para=
ffin, clean drinking water, bedding and clothing. Not only do we provi=
de the elderly with food and clothing right throughout the year.
We would also like to provide each destitute elderly with extra vitami=
ns, mineral and protein intake.
We assist the elderly with weekly/monthly food parcels; it becomes dif=
ficult for them to stay positive and healthy when they don=E2=80=99t e=
ven know when and where they will receive their next meal, it cost us =
+/- R1600 per month per food parcel this is just for the bare food ess=
entials in most cases this include paraffin / gas / candles and clean =
water, with current prices it=E2=80=99s not covering some elderlies ne=
eds, as we take in consideration the different needs of each individua=
l as the elderlies diets differs due to illnesses, we find it a waist =
and unhuman to provide food parcels just in the name of providing a fo=
od parcel and which will not be of beneficial to the elderly who recei=
ves it. That is why we rely on the public for donations so that we can=
be able to do this.
Because we procure in bulk, we can assist more with less, even dealing=
with raised prices;
=E2=80=A2 R 150- 2 Elderly have food for 2 days.
=E2=80=A2 R 750 - 2 Elderly have food for 10 days.
=E2=80=A2 R 1500 =E2=80=93 2 Elderly have food for 20 days.
=E2=80=A2 R 6000 2 Elderly have food for three months.
=E2=80=A2 R 18=E2=80=99000 =E2=80=93 2 Elderly have food for =
6 months (186 days).
Providing basic food parcels for the elderly is costly, and we need sp=
onsors. Without your assistance, none of this would be possible.
Please keep in mind that any donation given to one of our initiatives,=
including this one, is eligible for a tax deduction, as we do provide=
you with a section 18A receipt.
We understand we are currently facing tumultuous times, and therefore =
we know how difficult it is for so many people, we especially feel the=
impact of it greatly and ask that if you are in any means in a positi=
on to assist this project no matter how small you may think it is, to =
us it=E2=80=99s huge every R1 counts, not does it just help to reach o=
ur goal but it inspires knowing that we have supporters in this! Pleas=
e help us reach our goal for these scared souls it would greatly go a =
long way!
With recent economic challenges in our country, our request from the e=
lderly and families has increased 10-fold, and at the moment we are tr=
ying to reach our already approved families and elderly on our list wh=
ich has become a very difficult task, although we will be working extr=
a hard towards our elderly we will still continue as always to assist =
our families with children with their monthly food parcels, this has n=
ot changed, just like we believe our elderly are vulnerable and forgot=
ten we feel our children is just as important and our feeding, Christm=
as and school drives for them will always remain and still requires sp=
onsorships.
Please respond to this email if you are making a donation to this dese=
rving cause in order to ensure that you receive your Receipt
